Made from a wee type of grape (and not, as you might think, fresh currants), these dried fruits are basically raisins with a bit of posh.
In fact, dried currants are just a tinier raisin made from a smaller grape that used to go by the same name but is now more commonly called Zante or Cornith. They're on the drier side, with a more nuanced, less-sweet taste than your everyday raisins, making them a bit of a step up in the culinary canon, and by far the raisin of choice for lending pops of color and flavor to British scones. Like any raisin, be they purple or golden, currants are excellent in granola and snack mixes, or sampled out of hand.
